Civil Commitment for Sex Offenders
Anyone who is arrested for a sex crime or a crime that is alleged to be "sexually motivated", could be subjected to indefinite civil commitment under the Jimmy Ryce Law. Although this Law has only been active since late 1998, the law applies retroactively. The Jimmy Ryce Law was designed to keep individuals locked up when the State alleges they have a mental abnormality or personality disorder that prohibits them from controlling their sexual behavior. Government doctors are not always fair in their assessment, so it is important to have a knowledgeable attorney on your side.
Civil commitment is indefinite. Contact me as soon as possible to protect your rights. There are a number of ways that I can help you.
- If you awaiting a commitment determination trial, I will work hard to prove that you are able to control your sexual behavior.
- If you have served time in the past for a sex crime, but have recently been arrested for a non-sex crime, I will defend your rights in the current case, and protect you from being committed for the previous conviction.
- If you have already been committed, I will work to prove that you have had sufficient treatment to be released.
Other Consequences of Sex Crimes Convictions
While civil commitment may be the most severe penalty for sex crimes, others can affect your future as well. I will work hard to minimize or avoid these possible consequences of a conviction:
- Sex Offender Registration
- Time in Jail or Prison
- Sex Offender Probation
- Out Patient Group Treatment
- Polygraph Tests
